August 2024 Core Update
On August 15th, Google began launching the August 2024 Core Update. It finished rolling out on September 3rd. The last recent update prior to this update was the March 2024 update.
In this update, Google focuses on providing users with more valuable, helpful, and high-quality content. This update targets content made solely for the purpose of ranking well in the search engine, or that provides no value to users, further enhancing the importance of original, high-quality, and valuable content.
Feedback came from creators and others based on the negative impact of the September 2023 update and other updates. For those who were impacted by the September 2023 helpful content update, there has been some improvement for some sites. Though, not all.
Updated Core Update Guidance
Alongside the August 2024 core update, Google revamped its Core Update Guidance. If your site has experienced a drop in position and you suspect there is a connection with the core update, Google has created a process:
- Confirm the update has finished. To complete this, use the Search Status Dashboard.
However, Google does recommend waiting at least a full week after the update to analyze your site in Google Search Console. Furthermore, compare this week with a week before the core update began rolling out to pinpoint what changed.
- Review top pages and queries: Analyze where your site’s rankings were before and after the August 2024 core update. This may be a small or large drop.
If you experienced a small drop in position (Google states this as position 2 to 4):
- Google does not recommend drastic action and states that content performing well should not be changed.
If you have experienced a large drop in position (Google states this as position 4 to 29):
- Google recommends a deeper assessment.
